Dictionary Project
Description: We purchased the MacMillan Youth Dictionary for our local elementary school and library, to promote literacy and identify the Rotary Club with supporting education.
Participation: This project involved six Rotarians who worked as a committee to select the dictionary, identify the donees, and make the purchase and donation.
Results: The elementary school was very happy to receive the books, and chose to distribute them to the classes of fourth- fifth- and sixth-grade students. Each classroom received five copies of the dictionary, and we donated an additional ten books to the public library. We took pictures of the presentation, which were published in our local paper.
Summary: This project is simple to execute and does not involve a lot of planning or expense. We purchased a total of forty books at about $10 per book. One of the benefits of this project was to give us some public relations exposure in our efforts to promote literacy.
